Hundreds Unite In Kansas City To Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, dozens of families and hundreds of cancer survivors came together at Gilda’s Club Kansas City to honor National Cancer Survivors Day, a powerful celebration of life, strength, and resilience.

Held annually since 1988, this national observance recognizes those who have survived cancer and raises awareness about the ongoing challenges they face.

The event in Kansas City, Missouri, took place in the parking lot at 43rd and Mill Creek Parkway, transforming into a hub of joy, support, and unity.

Community Gathers for a Day of Celebration and Support

National Cancer Survivors Day is more than a celebration—it’s an opportunity for survivors, their families, and local organizations to connect.

This year’s gathering featured more than a dozen community organizations, each offering vital resources such as wellness programs, educational materials, counseling services, and survivor support.

Among the notable participants was Steve Hentzen, co-founder of the Prostate Network, who shared his own journey. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010, Hentzen credits a routine check-up for saving his life.

“Because of that physical, my prostate cancer was caught, and it’s the only reason I’m standing here today,” said Hentzen. “Cancer is a horrible thing, but you can turn a negative into a positive.”

Cancer Statistics and Local Impact

According to 2024 estimates from the American Cancer Society, over 2 million new cancer cases were expected in the U.S., including:

  • 39,120 cases in Missouri
  • 16,640 cases in Kansas

These numbers highlight the ongoing need for early detection, support networks, and accessible treatment, all of which were emphasized at Sunday’s event.
