Six days after his birth in 2021, Parker Patton developed intestinal malrotation with volvulus, a rare but life-threatening condition where the intestines twist and cut off blood flow.
His father, James Patton, recalled the warning signs:

Because of delayed treatment, Parker lost most of his intestines, permanently altering his quality of life.
Years of Intensive Medical Care
Since infancy, Parker has depended on constant medical intervention. He receives nutrition through a central line, which has frequently failed or become infected, leading to repeated hospitalizations and surgeries.
Over the past five years, Parker has undergone multiple surgical procedures and continuous treatment costing millions of dollars. His parents estimate they have already paid nearly $10,000 out of pocket, not including indirect costs like travel and missed work.
Why a $35 Million Verdict Becomes $1 Million?
The Patton family filed a medical malpractice lawsuit and won $35 million to cover past, present, and future medical expenses. However, their attorney, Brad Prochaska, explained that Kansas law severely limits how much can actually be collected.
Decades ago, malpractice coverage in Kansas was unlimited. Today, doctors are only required to carry insurance up to a capped amount. Once insurance limits and statutory caps are applied, the family will likely receive around $1 million—a fraction of what was awarded.
A Life With Profound Limitations
Doctors say Parker will likely never speak, eat independently, or live beyond age 30 due to complications from his condition. Despite this heartbreaking prognosis, his parents remain focused on giving him the fullest life possible.
His mother, Jamie Patton, shared that their goal is simple: to surround Parker with comfort, happiness, and love for as long as they have him.

To help offset ongoing medical costs, the Pattons have launched a GoFundMe campaign. They hope community support can bridge the massive financial gap left by legal limits on malpractice compensation.
