Kansas veteran Kim Redding began his journey after realizing college was not the right fit for him. After completing about a year of studies and working in short-term jobs, he chose a different path by joining the U.S. Air Force.
That decision laid the foundation for a long and meaningful career in law enforcement and airmen rehabilitation.
Training in Base Security and Law Enforcement
Once enlisted, Redding trained as a base security police officer, performing duties similar to civilian law enforcement. His role involved responding to domestic incidents, protecting families on base, and supporting children and victims during difficult situations.
This experience sharpened his skills and reinforced his commitment to public service.
First Assignment in Alaska
Redding’s first duty station was Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, a place he actively requested due to his love for the outdoors.
Raised with a passion for hunting, backpacking, and nature, Alaska felt like home despite others thinking the choice was unusual. Alongside the natural beauty, the job required serious responsibility and constant readiness.
Transfer to Colorado and Family Connection
After four years in Alaska, Redding transferred to Colorado, where his father was also stationed as an officer. The assignment created unique moments, including saluting his own father while on duty.
During this period at Lowry Air Force Base, Redding transitioned into a new role focused on rehabilitation services for struggling airmen.
Helping Airmen Through Rehabilitation
Working at the rehab center became one of the most rewarding parts of his military career. Redding helped service members overcome challenges and stay on track professionally.
He described saving an airman’s career as deeply fulfilling, highlighting his dedication beyond traditional law enforcement duties.
Return to Alaska and Overseas Deployment
Redding later returned to Alaska, this time serving in Fairbanks in law enforcement. In early 1992, he concluded his active-duty service with a three-month deployment in Saudi Arabia, where he provided base and aircraft security.
His responsibilities included guarding flight lines and preventing unauthorized access to military installations.
Life After Military Service
After leaving the Air Force as a staff sergeant, Redding remained in Alaska. He continued serving the public as both a game warden and a corrections officer, building another successful career in public safety.
Following retirement, he relocated to Wichita, often referred to as the Air Capital, to spend more time with his father.
