Kansas City has recently experienced a concerning surge in domestic violence-related homicides, prompting law enforcement and community organizations to intensify their efforts to address this critical issue.
As of early February 2025, the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) has reported 15 homicides, with three directly linked to domestic violence incidents.
This figure is particularly alarming considering that in the entire year of 2022, there were only three domestic violence-related homicides.

In a tragic event on a recent Tuesday morning, an argument between a mother and her son escalated into a fatal stabbing, resulting in the son’s death.
Just two days prior, a grandmother, mother, and daughter were allegedly shot and killed by the mother’s ex-boyfriend. These incidents underscore the escalating severity of domestic disputes turning deadly in the community.
KCPD’s Response to the Rising Numbers
Officer Alayna Gonzalez of the KCPD expressed deep concern over the rapid increase in homicides, stating, “Our homicide numbers have spiked at a rapid rate… It’s not the community we want to raise our kids in.”
She emphasized the profound and lasting impact these tragedies have on families and neighborhoods, highlighting the collective responsibility to foster a safer environment.
Collaborative Efforts with Community Partners
To combat the surge in domestic violence, the KCPD is strengthening partnerships with local organizations dedicated to supporting survivors.
One such organization is Newhouse, a shelter that provides refuge and resources for those affected by domestic abuse.
Chris Stibbs, Chief Development Officer at Newhouse, noted that the shelter is currently at full capacity, housing 92 individuals, and receives approximately 45 calls daily from individuals seeking shelter—calls that, regrettably, must be turned away due to limited space.
The Need for Expanded Services and Education
Stibbs advocates for increased services to address the root causes of domestic violence and emphasizes the importance of early intervention.
He stresses the need for educational programs targeting youth to promote healthy relationships and identify warning signs of abuse.
“If we can get to that generation now, that’s where we can truly break this cycle,” Stibbs stated, underscoring the long-term benefits of proactive education.
