Kansas City Pressed to Secure Chiefs’ Future in Missouri, Says Gov. Kehoe

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe announced Thursday that the responsibility now lies with Kansas City leaders to secure the Chiefs’ future in Missouri.

While the state has already committed to significant funding, the next steps will depend on local government action.

State Support and Local Funding Needs

Governor Kehoe confirmed that the state has approved financial incentives covering half of the costs for renovations and new construction at the Chiefs’ stadium.

The remainder of the funding may require a local tax, subject to approval by Jackson County residents in a public vote.

Kehoe emphasized the importance of both sides coming together:

“The Chiefs are very interested in ensuring that, in addition to the state’s package approved in June, Jackson County also contributes its share,” he stated.

Timeline for Decision

Although the Chiefs have not set a formal deadline, Governor Kehoe hinted that a decision could be made within the next few months regarding the stadium’s future.

Royals’ Stadium Future Also in Focus

The Kansas City Royals are also evaluating stadium options. A portion of land where a potential future stadium could be located belongs to the Kansas City Parks Department, but the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City’s former headquarters—part of the site—has recently been purchased by a new owner.

Kehoe noted that the team will weigh all possibilities:

“Ownership will consider what’s best for them. Our position is neutral, but we want them to remain on this side of the river,” he explained.

Mayor Lucas Confirms Washington Square Park Is Still an Option

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas clarified that the Royals’ new property ownership does not eliminate Washington Square Park as a possible stadium location.

“Not at all,” Lucas said, welcoming Crain, the new property owner, to the city. He stressed that Crain has already built strong ties with City Hall and is expected to work closely with local leaders on future development projects.

The mayor reaffirmed the city’s vision:

“Our commitment is to enhance downtown Kansas City. We are prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure projects benefit the community and strengthen the city’s urban core.”

The future of professional sports in Kansas City remains at a pivotal point. With the state of Missouri providing half of the funding for the Chiefs’ stadium, the decision now rests with local leaders and Jackson County voters to complete the deal.

At the same time, the Royals’ stadium plans continue to evolve, with city officials committed to keeping development projects in downtown Kansas City. Ultimately, both decisions will shape the long-term sports and economic landscape of the region.
