A 34-year-old Kansas sheriff’s deputy, Elijah Ming, was fatally shot on Saturday, July 26, 2025, while responding to a domestic violence incident in Kansas City, Kansas.
Deputy Ming was a 9-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office and was assisting a woman who feared for her safety while moving out of a residence.
Domestic Disturbance Turns Deadly
The woman had previously informed authorities that a man inside the house had threatened her and her friends with a firearm during an earlier attempt to move out. She requested police presence to ensure her safety while retrieving her belongings.
At approximately 3:45 p.m., Deputy Ming and a Kansas City Police Department officer arrived at the scene. As they approached the home, gunfire erupted, and Deputy Ming was struck. The KCPD officer was not injured.
Gunman Opens Fire, Then Barricades Inside
According to Kansas City Police Chief Karl Oakman, as additional officers responded, the suspect continued shooting, prompting law enforcement to return fire. The shooter, later identified as 38-year-old Shawn Harris, was wounded during the exchange and retreated into the residence, where he barricaded himself.
Negotiation and Surrender
Crisis negotiators spent about one hour speaking with Harris before he surrendered peacefully. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and was reported to be in good condition as of Saturday night.
Community in Mourning
Sheriff Daniel Soptic expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Deputy Ming, stating, “He gave his life serving Wyandotte County and its residents.” Kansas City Mayor Tyrone Gardner also called for community support, saying, “No words can ease the pain of losing a loved one to senseless violence.“
Investigation Underway
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has taken over the case and will submit findings to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office to determine appropriate charges against Harris.
