Kansas Launches Innovative STEAM Academy for High School Students This Fall

Beginning this fall, Kansas high school students will have an exciting new opportunity to engage in science and technology-based education through the newly established Ad Astra STEAM Academy.

The program will blend online coursework with hands-on learning experiences at the renowned Cosmosphere.

Four-Year Program Blends Virtual Learning with Real-World Labs

The Ad Astra STEAM Academy is a four-year educational track that focuses on developing student skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

Participants will complete customized online coursework through the Ad Astra Virtual Academy platform while attending weekly lab sessions at the Cosmosphere.

Key program elements include:

  • Immersive labs, engineering simulations, and design challenges
  • Access to Cosmosphere exhibits, restoration laboratories, and mentorship from industry experts
  • A culminating senior project showcased at a special year-end presentation

Students progress through the program in four levels, earning one elective credit per year. Importantly, no prerequisites are required, making the academy accessible to all high school students across the state.

Dual-Credit Opportunities with Kansas Colleges

In addition to the core curriculum, students can earn dual-credit through partnerships with:

  • K-State Salina
  • Hutchinson Community College
  • WSU Tech

These partnerships allow students to gain college-level experience while still in high school, enhancing their academic and career readiness in STEAM fields.

Enrollment Now Open — Apply Early

Enrollment for the 2025–2026 school year is now open through the Ad Astra Virtual Academy. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early, as space is limited.

Interested families can request more information or begin the application process by emailing the academy directly.

The launch of the Ad Astra STEAM Academy represents a major step forward in STEAM education for Kansas high school students.

By combining virtual instruction with interactive, hands-on learning at the Cosmosphere, the program equips students with the practical skills, academic credits, and real-world experience needed to succeed in high-demand STEM careers.
