Work on the Loop 20 highway expansion in Laredo is steadily moving forward, with Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials confirming the project is approaching 40% completion.
Construction activity remains active across multiple sections of the corridor as crews advance through key infrastructure phases.
Major Construction Milestones Achieved
According to project officials, several foundational elements are already in place. These include the installation of culverts, ditch grading, roadway paving, light poles, and critical connections to new water and sewer systems.
These completed components are essential for supporting future roadway capacity and long-term durability.
Phase Three Set to Begin Soon
A spokesperson from the Laredo Sector Transportation Department, Raul Leal, stated that the project is performing on schedule and will move into Phase Three early next year.
Current construction efforts are concentrated on the northbound frontage road, where a brand-new frontage lane is being built.
Crews are also tying in water main connections and drainage systems, which are necessary before additional roadway layers can be completed.
As part of the ongoing work, traffic has periodically been shifted from one side of the roadway to the other. Officials emphasized that advance notices are issued to alert drivers ahead of these traffic pattern changes.
Cost and Completion Timeline
The Loop 20 expansion is a major infrastructure investment with an estimated total cost of $360 million. If construction continues as planned, the entire project is expected to reach completion by February 2029.
The Loop 20 highway expansion continues to make measurable progress, with nearly 40% of the work completed and major infrastructure already installed.
As the project enters its next phase, residents can expect continued construction activity, periodic traffic shifts, and steady advancement toward a modernized roadway designed to support Laredo’s growing transportation needs.
