In a concerning incident at the University of Missouri, 41-year-old Jeffrey Wheeland Jr. has been charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping, and fourth-degree assault following an unauthorized entry into the Sigma Kappa sorority house.
The event has raised significant safety concerns within the university community.
Incident Overview
According to court records, on the evening of February 4, 2025, Wheeland Jr. was dropped off at the University Hospital by the Columbia Police Department for treatment.
Feeling unsafe and believing he was being pursued by individuals intent on harming him, he fled the hospital premises.
While traversing the campus’s Greek life residential area, he noticed an open back door to the basement of the Sigma Kappa sorority house as someone exited. Seizing the opportunity, he entered the residence around 7 p.m.
Details of the Intrusion
The individual who had opened the door recounted that Wheeland Jr. explained his presence and requested to call the police.
Despite being asked to remain outside, he prevented the door from closing and forced his way into the house. Once inside, he proceeded to the kitchen, where he armed himself with multiple knives, and then moved to a basement study room occupied by a female resident.
He assured her he meant no harm, barricaded the door by locking it and placing a chair against it, and remained inside.
Police Intervention
The female resident, too frightened to confront Wheeland Jr., discreetly texted friends, urging them to contact 911.
Upon arrival, officers observed Wheeland Jr. in the study room with the woman, the door secured and barricaded, and knives in his possession. Following police commands, he relinquished the weapons and was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
Legal Proceedings
Wheeland Jr. is currently held without bond and faces charges of:
- First-Degree Burglary: Unlawful entry into a structure with intent to commit a crime.
- Second-Degree Kidnapping: Unlawful confinement of a person against their will.
