Match Preview Kansas City Current Wraps Up First Half of NWSL Season Against Angel City FC

The red-hot Kansas City Current (10-2-0, 30 pts.) look to extend their five-game win streak as they close out the first half of the 2025 NWSL regular season against Angel City FC (4-5-3, 15 pts.).

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on Friday, June 20, at CPKC Stadium, where the team will also honor Juneteenth with special themed activations throughout the evening.

Fans can tune in live on Prime Video, with commentary from Jason Knapp and Lori Lindsey, while Tabitha Turner provides sideline coverage.

Local radio broadcasts will air on 90.9 The Bridge, and multilingual coverage in English, Spanish, and Portuguese is available via the KC Current App.

Dominance at CPKC Stadium

CPKC Stadium, the first stadium in the world built specifically for a women’s professional sports team, has become a fortress for the

Current. Since opening in March 2024, the team has posted an incredible 21-1-3 record across all competitions at home, including 14-1-3 in NWSL regular season play.

Kansas City has scored in every match played at the venue and is the only team this season with a perfect home record.

In their last 14 home matches, the Current have gone 13-1-0, outscoring opponents 38-8. Leading the charge is 2024 NWSL MVP Temwa Chawinga, who has been involved in at least one goal in 16 of her 18 home regular season appearances, totaling 21 goal contributions (17 goals, 4 assists).

Fast and Furious Starts

The Current have made a habit of starting games aggressively. Of their 28 goals this season, 20 have come in the first half, including six within the first 15 minutes of play.

Kansas City leads the league in first-half goals this year and has scored three or more goals in the first half four times this season—all at home.

Several of the NWSL’s fastest goals in 2025 have come from Kansas City, including early strikes from Bia Zaneratto, Michelle Cooper, and Temwa Chawinga. Cooper, notably, has scored nine of her 10 career goals in the first half.

Goals, Goals, Goals

With 28 goals through 12 matches, Kansas City boasts the most prolific offense in the NWSL. The team has scored first in 14 of its last 15 regular season games and holds a 10-1-0 record this year when doing so.

The Current have led for nearly 70% of their match time this season and have held multi-goal leads for 45% of that time. Their +18 goal differential ranks best in the league, six more than their closest competitor.

Star Performer: Temwa Chawinga

Chawinga, already a household name in women’s soccer, continues to shine in 2025. With eight goals and two assists, she currently ranks second in the Golden Boot race and leads the league in game-winning goals (4).

She’s two goals shy of becoming the 15th player in NWSL history to reach 30 regular season goals—and the first to do so with Kansas City.

Chawinga has scored in five consecutive matches, marking her third streak of five or more games with goals. She also holds the NWSL record for most consecutive scoring appearances in regular season play with eight—a feat she’s accomplished twice.

Defensive Spark: Hailie Mace

Hailie Mace has emerged as a key playmaker, ranking second in the NWSL with four assists this season. She recently became the club’s all-time regular season assist leader (10) and has contributed to five shutouts in 2025.

Mace earned NWSL Best XI honors for May, marking the third time she’s received the distinction.

International Call-Ups and Key Absences

Several Kansas City players will participate in international duty during the upcoming break:

  • Nichelle Prince (Canada) – Matches vs. Costa Rica (June 27) and USA (July 2)
  • Lorena (Brazil) – Friendly vs. France (June 27)
  • Michelle Cooper, Claire Hutton, Izzy Rodriguez (USA) – Friendlies vs. Ireland and Canada

Rodriguez’s selection marks her first USWNT call-up.

Player to Watch: Vanessa DiBernardo

Midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo is coming off a historic moment. In Kansas City’s last match, she recorded her 31st career NWSL assist, tying the league record.

With one more, she’ll also match the Current’s club record for regular season assists (10). DiBernardo also has two goals and an assist in her last two matches against Angel City FC and is just one win away from tying for second all-time in NWSL regular season victories (99).

Angel City’s Standout: Riley Tiernan

Angel City forward Riley Tiernan poses a major threat. With seven goals and one assist, she leads her team and is currently fourth in the Golden Boot race.

Her three game-winning goals tie the Angel City single-season record. Tiernan, the reigning NWSL Rookie of the Month for both April and May, has started all 12 matches and was signed earlier this year following a stellar college career at Rutgers University.

Friday’s match will include special Juneteenth celebrations, honoring the end of slavery in the United States. Expect community engagement, themed merchandise, and pre-match activations on CPKC Plaza.
