Merc Co+op to Close Downtown KCK Store by End of 2025

The Merc Co+op has announced it will permanently close its downtown Kansas City, Kansas location at 501 Minnesota Avenue by the end of 2025. The community-owned grocery store, which opened in August 2020, aimed to address a longstanding food desert in the area.

Financial Challenges Behind the Decision

In a letter dated June 30, the store’s operators informed the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas of their intention to terminate the operating agreement effective December 30, 2025.

According to a statement on the store’s website, the decision was made “based on what’s best for the long-term viability of the co-op and the location’s financial performance.”

Lawrence Store Remains Open

While the Kansas City, Kansas location will shut down, the Lawrence Merc Co+op will remain operational. The co-op assured customers that the closure would not affect operations in Lawrence.

Support for Affected Employees

The Merc Co+op is working to assist the 12 employees impacted by the closure. Management stated, “We’re committed to exploring every opportunity to transition these dedicated employees to roles on our Lawrence team or prepare them for placement elsewhere.” The store is finalizing plans to offer support and a smooth transition.

History of the Project

The Merc Co+op project began in July 2018, when local officials unveiled a $6 million investment to develop the store. This funding covered construction, the grand opening, and a stabilization fund to support operations.

Filling a Critical Need

The store’s opening addressed a major concern in the community. For years, the area lacked access to fresh groceries following the closure of Piggly Wiggly on 7th Street.

At the time, Carolyn Wyatt of the Fowler Park Neighborhood Association said, “We really have had a struggle with where are we going to get an onion, tomatoes, bread, eggs, or bacon.

While the Merc Co+op’s downtown KCK location will close at the end of 2025, its impact over the past five years remains significant. As the community prepares for the transition, store leadership is prioritizing employee support and continued service at its Lawrence branch.
