The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is warning the public about a statewide text message scam in which fraudulent messages falsely claim to be from the agency.
These deceptive texts allege that recipients owe money for outstanding traffic tickets or toll fees, threatening severe penalties if payment is not made.
Scammers Imitating MoDOT to Spread Misinformation
According to MoDOT spokesperson Taylor Brune, many Missouri residents have reported receiving suspicious messages stating that they must pay toll or violation fees to avoid consequences like:
- Suspension of vehicle registration
- 30-day loss of driving privileges
- Toll booth and service charges of up to 35%
- Potential damage to credit score
“These claims are completely false,” Brune emphasized. “MoDOT does not send text messages requesting payment for tolls or traffic violations.”
MoDOT’s Official Guidance on Handling Scam Messages
To protect the public, MoDOT has posted an official scam alert on its website, clarifying that it never solicits payment for traffic violations via text.
If you receive one of these scam texts:
- Do not click on any links
- Delete the message immediately
- Report the sender as junk or spam within your messaging app
Brune also noted that many of the scam messages originate from phone numbers associated with the Philippines’ country code, further confirming their illegitimacy.
As text message scams continue to evolve, it’s crucial for Missouri residents to remain cautious and informed.
MoDOT is actively working to spread awareness and urges the public not to engage with any suspicious texts claiming to represent the department.
Staying alert and reporting these messages can help prevent identity theft and financial loss.
