In Stillwater, Oklahoma, thousands of adults aiming to continue their education have been left in uncertainty due to a sudden halt in federal funding.
The Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education (CareerTech), which plays a key role in adult education and literacy, did not receive over $7.5 million in federal grants at the beginning of the new fiscal year—leaving crucial programs in jeopardy.
The Importance of Adult Education in Oklahoma
Brent Haken, the director of Oklahoma CareerTech, emphasized the severity of the issue, particularly in a state where nearly 300,000 adults lack a high school diploma.
He stated, “This funding is vital in helping adults pursue basic education, earn diplomas, and open doors to better career opportunities.”
These adult education and family literacy programs are designed to bridge educational gaps and prepare learners for either entry into the workforce or further vocational training.
Max McKnight, director of workforce training at CareerTech, added, “Once they earn their high school credential, some will enroll in full-time programs at technology centers, while others may transition directly into the workforce.”
Why the Funding Freeze Happened
The Trump administration imposed the funding freeze, citing concerns that some of the money might be used to educate undocumented immigrants.
While the intent was to ensure that federal funds benefit U.S. citizens, Haken clarified the agency’s position: “We’re very clear that we want these funds to benefit Oklahomans—people contributing to our local economy, whether U.S. citizens or not.”
According to Haken, CareerTech already complies with a strict state statute that ensures funds are directed appropriately.
“We’ve taken extra steps to make sure we’re only serving eligible participants,” he said, suggesting that the review is likely part of a broader national effort to ensure compliance across states.
Widespread Impact Across Oklahoma
The freeze affects 30 providers across 119 educational sites in the state. The consequences are extensive:
- More than 500 staff members have been directly impacted.
- Over 12,000 students who enrolled in adult education programs last year are now left in limbo.
- Educational pathways that help low-income and underserved adults gain essential credentials are currently stalled.
Hopeful but Uncertain Future
Oklahoma CareerTech remains optimistic that the funding will be reinstated soon. However, no definitive timeline has been given for the review process.
Until then, both educators and students are caught in a holding pattern, unable to proceed with vital learning and career advancement.
