Oklahoma Ranks Among Top Affordable U.S. States to Live

Oklahoma has once again been recognized as one of the most affordable states to live in the U.S., claiming the No. 4 position in a nationwide cost of living ranking.

The recent report, published by Visual Capitalist and based on data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, highlights the state’s continued appeal for budget-conscious residents.

Southern States Lead in Affordability

The study reflects a broader trend throughout the southern United States, where essential expenses like housing, groceries, utilities, and fuel tend to be less expensive than in other regions. Oklahoma’s affordability stands out even when compared to nearby Midwestern states such as Iowa, North Dakota, and Nebraska.

Understanding Regional Price Parity

The rankings are based on a measurement called regional price parity (RPP), which evaluates how the cost of goods and services in each state compares to the national average, set at an index of 100. A score below 100 indicates a lower cost of living.

Oklahoma received an impressive RPP score of 88, placing it well under the national average and reinforcing its status as a low-cost state. Only Arkansas (87), Mississippi, and South Dakota scored lower, making them the only states more affordable than Oklahoma.

Costliest States Contrast Sharply

At the other end of the spectrum, California ranked as the most expensive state, with a parity score of 113, largely due to soaring housing costs. Washington, D.C. followed closely behind with a score of 111, continuing the divide between high-cost and low-cost regions.

With a strong regional price parity score and consistently low everyday expenses, Oklahoma offers residents a high quality of life without the high price tag.

Whether it’s for new families, retirees, or professionals relocating for work, the state’s affordability makes it a top destination for those seeking to stretch their dollar further.
