The Horizon Scholars Program is designed to cultivate students who embody the Cowboy Code—demonstrating academic excellence, leadership potential, intellectual curiosity, determination, and a strong work ethic.

This one-of-a-kind opportunity combines renewable scholarships, immersive experiences, and tailored academic programming to prepare students for competitive careers and lifelong success.

A Curriculum That Shapes Future Leaders

Scholars from all academic backgrounds will engage in an interdisciplinary foundational curriculum focused on the humanities, social sciences, and STEM. This academic structure is enriched with:

  • Intensive reading and writing
  • Specialized seminars and current events analysis
  • Leadership development programs
  • Study abroad experiences
  • Campus involvement requirements
  • Career readiness coaching through the Eastin Center

The ultimate goal is to develop well-rounded thinkers who can approach challenges with creativity, independence, and critical insight.

Voices Behind the Vision

President Jim Hess praised the initiative as a reflection of OSU’s core values and the Cowboy spirit.

“These extraordinary families are making a real difference, not just by giving financially but by setting an example of what perseverance, generosity, and an OSU degree can accomplish,” said Hess. “We hope students will be inspired to push boundaries and ultimately give back, continuing the cycle of Cowboy generosity.”

Bryan and Jessica Begley, alumni from the Class of 1994 and 1995, emphasized the program’s role in preparing students for elite opportunities.

“We’re excited to see these students become top candidates for premier employers and grad schools. This is an investment in the future,” said Bryan Begley.

Likewise, Joe and Monica Eastin, key contributors to the program, expressed enthusiasm about supporting the next generation of leaders.

“It’s a privilege to help shape students who reflect the Cowboy Code,” said Joe Eastin, Chairman of ISN Software Corporation. “We’re thrilled to meet the inaugural class and watch them thrive.”

Long-Term Impact and Community Involvement

OSU’s vision is expansive. The OSU Foundation, in partnership with the initial donor families, is working to grow the program to support up to 400 students per year. Their goal is to eventually connect every OSU student with a donor-funded four-year scholarship.

“This is a movement driven by the Cowboy family’s spirit of generosity,” said Blaire Atkinson, President of the OSU Foundation. “We’re calling on other alumni and friends to help turn this into a reality for every deserving student.”
