Over 400 Dogs Rescued from Oklahoma Breeding Facility; Owner Arrested for Cruelty

More than 400 Maltese and Maltese-mix dogs were rescued this week from a breeding operation in Stroud, Oklahoma, sparking public outcry and legal action.

The dogs, previously housed under poor conditions at Add Love Pets, LLC, are now receiving care across various humane societies and rescue organizations throughout the state.

Rescue Teams Describe ‘Horrific’ Conditions

On Monday night, law enforcement, state officials, and animal welfare organizations worked together to remove the animals. The Humane Society of Tulsa described the scene as one of the worst they’ve ever witnessed.

“It was horrific!! We do not use that word lightly,” the Humane Society said in a statement.

The facility — a roughly 50-by-50-foot building adjacent to a grocery store — was found with dangerously high ammonia levels, overcrowded cages, and vermin infestations, including cockroaches and rats crawling over the dogs.

Social Media and Advocacy Sparked Action

Animal rescue groups like Skiatook Paws & Claws and Oklahoma Westie Rescue had already raised the alarm on social media over the weekend.

Bailey Brugger from Westie Rescue shared that while they had been coordinating with the breeder to rehome some dogs, the situation was far worse than expected.

Their advocacy, along with support from local residents, led to contacting law enforcement, elected officials, and state agencies, resulting in a swift intervention.

“If you come across something like this, report it to big rescues and law enforcement,” Brugger urged.

Legal and Inspection Background

The breeding business, Add Love Pets, LLC, has operated in Oklahoma since 2007 and has been under the ownership of Jerry Hine since 2013.

According to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF), licensed breeders in the state must undergo annual inspections.

Although ODAFF oversees compliance, the final decision to seize the dogs came from local law enforcement, following an inspection earlier this week.

Jerry Hine, aged 84, has been arrested for animal cruelty and was booked into Lincoln County Jail.

Next Steps for the Rescued Dogs

Currently, the rescued animals are being cared for by local shelters and rescue organizations, but they are not yet available for adoption. Their future adoptability depends on the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, ODAFF has not provided details about Add Love Pets’ inspection records or violation history, citing the need for a formal records request.

This large-scale rescue operation in central Oklahoma highlights the importance of public vigilance, community advocacy, and swift law enforcement action in confronting animal cruelty.

As the rescued dogs recover and legal proceedings continue, the spotlight remains on the need for stricter oversight and more transparent breeder regulations in the state.
