The Incident- August 5, 2025
In the early hours of August 5, 2025, officers from the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department responded to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance involving a knife-wielding suspect.
The incident occurred in the 900 block of Riverview Avenue, where a man had reportedly returned to a home following a violent knife assault earlier that evening.
As officers arrived at the scene, they were informed that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence. The situation quickly escalated into a stand-off.
To help de-escalate the situation and assist in the suspect’s apprehension, Dagger, a Belgian Malinois K-9 officer from the Shawnee Police Department, was brought in.
The Attack on Dagger
As the tactical unit attempted to enter the home and arrest the suspect, Dagger was deployed inside to locate and subdue the individual. However, the confrontation turned violent when the suspect stabbed Dagger, seriously injuring the dog before he could be restrained.
Despite his injuries, Dagger’s actions allowed officers to gain control of the situation and ultimately led to the safe surrender of the suspect, Edwin Perez, age 26.
Perez was arrested at approximately 7:30 a.m., following several hours of negotiations. The charges against him include:
- Aggravated battery
- Interference with law enforcement
- Harming a police dog
Emergency Medical Care & Recovery
