Two brothers from Kansas City, Missouri, have officially pleaded guilty in connection with a shooting at North Kansas City High School that left one adult and one student injured.

According to Clay County Circuit Court records filed on October 29, Lavon’dre M. Smallwood, 19, admitted to his involvement in the North Kansas City High School shooting.

The shooting took place on the east side of the school during a playoff basketball game between North Kansas City High School and Staley High School.

Court documents confirm that Smallwood pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including:

  • Accessory to second-degree assault
  • Unlawful use of a weapon

Incident Description

Investigators revealed that Lavon’dre Smallwood knowingly carried a loaded firearm into the school, discharged it, and injured both a teenager and an adult.

Witness statements indicated that the weapon was drawn in front of several individuals attending the event.

The shooting caused panic among students and spectators during the game, leading to an immediate response from law enforcement and emergency personnel on the scene.

Sentencing and Legal Proceedings

As part of Smallwood’s plea deal, the state prosecution has requested a 20-year prison sentence. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 23, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.

Earlier in March 2025, Michael Smallwood, Lavon’dre’s brother, pleaded guilty to related charges. By June, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in the same shooting incident.

Authorities also identified a third suspect, Nathaniel Greer, who is linked to the case. Greer is expected to appear in court for a pre-trial conference on February 6, followed by a jury trial on February 23, 2026.
