The Importance of Social Inclusion and Friendship
The event wasn’t just about showcasing the athletes’ sporting abilities; it was about fostering meaningful friendships and social connections.
According to Olivia Ryan, Southeast Region Director for Special Olympics Kansas, many of the athletes from different agencies already knew each other but had limited opportunities to strengthen those relationships outside of the competitive environment.
“This is really important to have that social, inclusive setting where they can all just hang out and it’s not centered around competition,” Ryan said. The luau provided athletes with the chance to relax and bond in a social, non-competitive setting.
Showcasing New Hope Services’ Facilities
Another key goal of the event was to highlight the impressive facilities offered by New Hope Services. The agency features a full gymnasium and a softball field, which are available for use by local teams for practice and collaboration.
This gave athletes a glimpse into the resources available to them, further enhancing the community’s involvement with Special Olympics Kansas.
Collaboration Among Local Agencies
The celebration was the result of a collaborative effort between Special Olympics Kansas and several local organizations, including New Hope, CLASS LTD, and Mosaic.
Brandee Hudgins, the team leader at CLASS LTD, emphasized the importance of bringing together Pittsburg area agencies to foster unity. “It’s about the individual and the athlete at the end of the day,” said Hudgins, underscoring the event’s focus on personal growth and inclusivity rather than competition.
