Sporting KC Hires David Lee as Chief Soccer Officer, Taps into MLS Cup–Winning Background

Sporting Kansas City has appointed David Lee as its new President of Soccer Operations and General Manager, marking one of the most significant front-office changes in over a decade.

Lee, one of Major League Soccer’s most accomplished sporting directors, arrives after nine years with New York City FC (NYCFC), where he played a crucial role in building the team from its launch in 2015 to its first-ever MLS Cup victory in 2021.

Championship Experience and Career Journey

Lee brings an impressive pedigree to Children’s Mercy Park. At NYCFC, he guided the club from an expansion side into a consistent contender.

His career with the City Football Group saw him rise through the ranks—starting as Director of Player Recruitment, moving up to Technical Director, and ultimately being named Sporting Director in 2019.

Vision for a New Era

Co-Principal Owner Michael Illig called Lee’s hiring a “transformational decision” following a six-month global search. He praised Lee’s global expertise, fresh perspective, and ambition as key assets for the club’s future.

Illig emphasized:

“As we enter a new era for Sporting Kansas City, David was the undeniable choice. With his leadership, we are committed to building a team that reflects the pride of our community while competing at the highest levels of MLS.”

Commitment to Fans and Club Culture

In his first official remarks, Lee expressed excitement about working with players, coaches, and staff while highlighting Sporting KC’s strong legacy, loyal fanbase, and winning culture.

Lee stated:

“Sporting Kansas City has a proud history, a passionate fanbase, and a culture of success. I am grateful to the ownership group for this opportunity and look forward to building on the strong foundation here. I’m eager to work alongside our players, staff, and incredible supporters to achieve our shared goals.”

NYCFC’s Farewell and Recognition

NYCFC also issued a statement thanking Lee for his contributions. Marty Edelman, Co-Vice Chairman of NYCFC, noted that Lee had been instrumental in developing talent through both the academy and first team, and had become one of the most respected sporting directors in MLS.

Strategic Reset for Sporting KC

Lee’s appointment positions Sporting KC for an ambitious reset, with immediate implications for the 2025 MLS campaign. His influence will extend into offseason roster building, as the club aims to reestablish itself as a championship contender.

The hiring of David Lee marks a turning point for Sporting Kansas City, signaling a renewed commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

With his MLS Cup-winning experience, global perspective, and dedication to engaging with the club’s passionate supporters, Lee’s leadership sets the stage for a new chapter of success.

As Sporting KC looks to the future, fans can expect a stronger, more competitive team driven by vision and ambition.
