Lyon County Prepares to Welcome The Wall That Heals: A Moving Tribute to Vietnam Veterans

Lyon County Prepares to Welcome The Wall That Heals

This August, the people of Lyon County are preparing for something truly special. A powerful tribute to American veterans, known as The Wall That Heals, is coming to Emporia later this month. On Thursday morning, the Lyon County Commissioners showed their support by signing a formal proclamation to welcome the memorial. Organizers are deeply touched by the local and regional outpouring of support that has helped bring this event to life.

What Is The Wall That Heals?

The Wall That Heals is a traveling replica of the famous Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. It stretches nearly 400 feet and bears the names of more than 58,000 men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Along with the wall, a mobile Education Center will travel with the display. The entire exhibit is free and open to the public, providing people of all ages a chance to learn about history and honor fallen heroes.

Lyon County Proclaims Support for the Wall

During their regular Thursday meeting, Lyon County Commissioners signed a proclamation recognizing the importance of the wall’s arrival. This public announcement confirms the county’s full support and encourages the local community to get involved.

Organizer Ed Rathke said this proclamation is one of the key actions by elected leaders that has helped motivate others to participate. He believes this kind of leadership has “opened the door” to wider community involvement.

Support Spreads Beyond Lyon County

It’s not just Lyon County backing the wall’s journey. Organizer Richelle Birk shared that Coffey County has also shown strong support. Even though the memorial will only pass through Coffey County on its way to Emporia, their leaders stepped in to help, proving this is a truly regional effort.

Welcoming the Wall: A Grand Procession Planned

One of the most exciting parts of the wall’s arrival will be a massive procession to officially welcome it into Emporia. Organizer Clay Childs said they expect the welcome procession to be at least a mile long. Many people from the community will likely take part in the event, including local officials and law enforcement.

Childs added that planning the procession’s route was one of the biggest challenges. But thanks to help from local police and sheriff’s departments, the plan is now in place. The collaboration among local leaders has made this event more organized and safe for everyone attending.

Why Emporia Was Chosen

According to Tim Tetz, Director of Outreach at the Vietnam War Memorial Fund, Emporia was selected from over 100 communities that applied to host the wall. Emporia stood out because of how dedicated the organizers and community members were to bringing the memorial to town.

Emporia is one of only 30+ communities nationwide chosen to host The Wall That Heals in 2025. The selection is a major honor and highlights the area’s deep respect for veterans.

City Commission to Join in Support

The Emporia City Commission is also expected to show its support. A similar proclamation is planned for discussion during their upcoming Wednesday meeting. This means both the city and county governments are united in welcoming the memorial.

More Local Updates from the Commission

In addition to recognizing the memorial’s arrival, Lyon County Commissioners also received a quarterly update from CareArc administrators, who oversee important healthcare services for the county. The commission will meet again next Thursday at 9 a.m. inside the Lyon County Courthouse.

Community Spirit Shines Through

The arrival of The Wall That Heals in Emporia is more than just an event—it’s a symbol of unity, honor, and respect for veterans. Local leaders, organizers, and citizens have come together to make this meaningful experience happen. The wall offers not only a chance to remember those who gave their lives in Vietnam but also an opportunity for everyone—especially young people—to learn about the sacrifices made for freedom. This project shows how strong a community can be when people come together with a common goal. If you’re in or near Emporia this August, make time to visit this powerful tribute. You’ll walk away informed, inspired, and thankful.
