Three Minor Earthquakes Shake Graham County Region on Saturday Afternoon

A sequence of three minor earthquakes struck parts of Graham County, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon, according to data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

All three tremors occurred within a short two-hour window, with magnitudes ranging between 2.5 and 2.7, making them noticeable but not destructive.

Earthquake Timeline and Locations

First Quake: Near Bogue

The first of the three seismic events hit at approximately 2:12 p.m., registering a magnitude of 2.6. The epicenter was located about 7 kilometers southwest of Bogue, a small town in Graham County.

This mild tremor may have been felt by nearby residents, although such magnitudes typically cause little to no damage.

Second Quake: South of Hill City

Roughly an hour and a half later, at 3:51 p.m., the second quake was detected south of Hill City. This earthquake recorded a magnitude of 2.5, slightly weaker than the first.

Again, while likely perceptible to those in close proximity, it was not strong enough to cause significant effects.

Third Quake: Trego-Graham County Line

Just two minutes later, at 3:53 p.m., the strongest quake of the trio was reported. Measuring 2.7 in magnitude, the earthquake occurred on the border between Trego and Graham Counties, specifically 11 kilometers northeast of Collyer.

Despite being the most intense, it remained within the range considered low on the Richter scale.

Seismic Activity Context

While Kansas is not typically known for frequent or severe seismic activity, small-scale earthquakes like these have become more common in recent years, often attributed to natural shifts in the Earth’s crust or human-induced causes like wastewater injection from oil and gas operations.

Experts emphasize that earthquakes below magnitude 3.0 are generally not damaging, though they can be felt under the right conditions.

The recent tremors serve as a reminder of the geological variability in the region and the importance of ongoing monitoring and preparedness.

On Saturday afternoon, three minor earthquakes were recorded in Graham County and surrounding areas, with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 2.7.

While none of the quakes resulted in damage, their close timing and proximity highlight the value of seismic awareness, even in regions with typically low earthquake risk.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and understand basic earthquake safety practices.
