Tragic Train Accident Claims Life of Kansas Boy: Body Recovered After Days-Long Search

The incident unfolded around 12:39 p.m. on Wednesday, when two young boys were caught on a railroad bridge near 115th Road and unable to get out of the path of an approaching train. The Neosho County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by Union Pacific officials about the tragic occurrence.

Immediate Response and Search Efforts

Deputies responding to the scene located the remains of 16-year-old Arthur Pollreis, but 12-year-old Kollin Showalter was initially reported missing.

Emergency crews launched an extensive search and recovery operation, but high and fast-moving waters in the Neosho River near Erie created extremely dangerous conditions. Search teams were hindered by flooded banks, powerful currents, and floating debris.

Due to the hazards posed by the river conditions, the operation was suspended by Saturday.

Recovery of Kollin Showalter

On Sunday at approximately 12:30 p.m., the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reported a possible sighting of the boy’s body near the KGE Dam, located just south of U.S. Highway 400 in Labette County.

First responders confirmed the sighting and successfully recovered Kollin’s body, which has since been turned over to the Neosho County Coroner.

“This has been an incredibly difficult week for everyone. I want to sincerely thank each first responder and every member of our community who supported the recovery efforts,” stated Sheriff Greg Taylor in a heartfelt Facebook post.
