President Donald Trump on Friday night reacted to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) announcement that she will step down from Congress in early January, calling the decision “great news for the country.”
His remarks come just a week after he publicly withdrew his support for the Georgia congresswoman, once one of his most vocal political allies.
Trump told ABC News reporter Rachel Scott that Greene did not inform him of her intention to resign before making the news public.
Trump Wishes Greene Well
“I think it’s great news for the country. It’s great,” Trump said, according to ABC News, adding that he hoped Greene would “be happy.”
He also noted that, at this point, he does not plan to speak with Greene about the matter but offered his best wishes.
Greene’s Statement On Decision
In her detailed resignation statement, Greene addressed her deteriorating relationship with Trump, noting that his recent comments were “hurtful.”
She emphasized that she would not remain in a position where she felt mistreated, saying she refused “to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping it all goes away and gets better.”
Greene highlighted that their disagreement over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files played a major role in escalating tensions between them in recent weeks.
“Loyalty should be a two-way street,” Greene stated.
