Two Women Charged After Downtown Lawrence Shooting Incident in April

Two women are facing criminal charges following an early morning shooting in downtown Lawrence in April that resulted in property damage to a local tire shop.

Identities and Charges

The suspects have been identified as Demetria Myerick Warner Wooden, 30, of Lawrence, and Lakeisha Breeann Warner Bass, 36, from Raymore, Missouri. Each woman is charged with two misdemeanors:

  • Unlawful discharge of a firearm within city boundaries
  • Obstruction of law enforcement efforts

In addition, Warner Wooden faces an extra felony charge of criminal damage to property for allegedly damaging a window, wall, and a tire at D&D Tires, located at 1000 Vermont Street.

Details of the April 12 Incident

According to police reports and witness accounts, the shooting occurred around 1 a.m. on April 12, near the intersection of 10th and Massachusetts streets.

Witnesses described a physical altercation between a man and a woman, during which multiple gunshots were fired.

Moments later, a vehicle with two women arrived at the scene, and additional gunfire was reported before the car fled the area. Officers later recovered two types of shell casings, indicating that multiple firearms may have been used.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the incident, police located a vehicle believed to be involved. Inside, they discovered a firearm matching the shell casings found at the scene.

One of the women was observed with injuries consistent with physical combat, according to law enforcement.

Despite evidence linking them to the scene, neither woman cooperated with investigators at the time. They were initially released, but both were subsequently booked into Douglas County Jail on Wednesday.

Court Proceedings

Warner Wooden and Warner Bass were later released on own-recognizance bonds, meaning no bail payment was required.

Both women are scheduled to appear in Douglas County District Court on July 9 for a status conference regarding the charges.

With court dates set for July, authorities continue to investigate the full scope of the altercation and the involvement of each suspect.
