Weekly Pro-Democracy Demonstrations in Lawrence Remain Strong

For several months, residents of Lawrence, Kansas, have gathered each Sunday in a strong and consistent show of resistance against what they believe are anti-democratic actions by the Trump administration.

These weekly protests, held at noon at the intersection of Ninth and Massachusetts Streets and South Park, continue to draw crowds in the hundreds.

Grassroots Gathering with a Shared Purpose

These demonstrations are not officially organized, yet they reflect a collective sentiment among participants who are deeply concerned about issues such as executive overreach, due process violations, and threats to civil liberties. Protesters unite through shared ideals, using chants like:

  • “This is what democracy looks like,”
  • “Power to the people,” and
  • “Love, not hate, makes America great!”

Voices from the Crowd: Passionate Protesters Speak Out

A protester from Eudora, who wished to remain unnamed, shared that he has been attending for over two months. His reasons include opposing racism, fascism, economic inequality, and what he describes as a regressive political agenda.

“I want equality for everybody,” he said, noting he’s participated in similar demonstrations in Lenexa, Topeka, and Kansas City, Missouri — but found Lawrence’s atmosphere the most inspiring.

He emphasized his belief in the country’s potential, stating,

“The U.S. is still the best place to live because it was founded on immigration and the pursuit of freedom. Yet now, many feel oppressed again.”

Local Leaders Fuel Citizen Engagement

Jerry Jost of North Lawrence reflected on the growing political awareness and activism among attendees. He expressed concern over corruption within the Trump administration, particularly citing erosion of the checks and balances system, unlawful detentions, and the alleged use of presidential power for personal financial gain.

To support community engagement, Jost launched takingcaretogether.org, a site providing resources, action steps, and connections to local organizations.

Upcoming Nationwide Day of Defiance: “No Kings” Protests Planned

Many local activists are preparing to participate in the “No Kings” protests on June 14, part of a broader Nationwide Day of Defiance. The date marks both Trump’s 79th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. In Washington, D.C., a controversial $45 million military parade is scheduled.

Formal No Kings protests are confirmed in Topeka, Ottawa, Lenexa, Overland Park, and Kansas City. While Lawrence is not officially listed, its residents have frequently rallied in sync with national movements.

Fourth of July Festivities with a Message

Adding to the activism, the Douglas County Democrats are organizing a “Freedom, Not Fascism Fest” on July 4 at Centennial Park. This event will feature:

  • Live music
  • Food trucks
  • A public reading of the Bill of Rights
  • Celebrations of the U.S. Constitution

Further details will be published in the Arc of Justice newsletter.

The weekly protests in Lawrence highlight a growing movement of citizens determined to defend democracy, promote justice, and call out perceived corruption and oppression.

Through collective action, grassroots efforts, and upcoming events like the No Kings protest and Freedom Fest, these community members continue to show that the spirit of activism is alive and thriving in Kansas.
