Wichita Launches New City ID Card Program for Residents

Wichita Launches New City ID Card Program for Residents

The City of Wichita has officially introduced a municipal identification card initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility to public services and fostering a greater sense of community.

These city-issued ID cards will feature key personal details such as the resident’s name, photograph, address, date of birth, a unique ID number, and the expiration date of the card.

Purpose and Benefits of the Wichita ID

According to city officials, the new identification card is designed to ensure that all Wichita residents, regardless of background or citizenship status, can more easily access City services and engage fully in civic life.

The program is especially targeted at individuals who may lack access to traditional forms of government-issued ID.

Wichita leaders also highlighted the card’s symbolic and practical value, stating that it will help “promote community pride” and offer a tangible form of identification that instills a sense of belonging and ownership among residents.

Limitations of the City ID

While the City of Wichita ID card provides several functional benefits, it does come with some restrictions. It is not a substitute for a Kansas state-issued ID, meaning it cannot be used for official activities like voting or registering to vote.

However, the ID is I-9 compliant, which means it can be used as part of the employment verification process for individuals seeking jobs—particularly beneficial for those who currently lack proper identification to prove their work eligibility.

Eligibility Criteria and Cost

The city is offering the Wichita ID card free of charge to all residents aged 14 and older. This inclusive age threshold allows younger residents, such as high school students and young adults, to benefit from having a formal piece of identification.

Where and When to Apply

Eligible residents can apply for their Wichita ID card in person at City Hall, located on the 1st floor, during normal business hours.

The service is available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No fees are required to obtain the card.

City Council Approval and Implementation Date

The program received unanimous approval from the Wichita City Council on March 18, 2025, signaling strong support for the initiative among local government leaders.

The decision reflects the city’s commitment to inclusion and community empowerment.

The launch of the Wichita City ID card program marks a significant step toward building a more inclusive and connected community.

By offering a free, accessible form of identification that can be used for employment and city services, the city aims to bridge gaps in access, strengthen civic participation, and enhance the sense of identity for all Wichita residents.

Those eligible are encouraged to visit City Hall to obtain their ID and take advantage of this important new resource.
