A riverbank construction project along the Arkansas River is currently causing temporary disruptions in Wichita’s Delano District.
As part of the ongoing development, a section of McLean Boulevard south of Douglas Avenue, near Equity Bank Park—home to the Wichita Wind Surge—has been closed to traffic.
Enhancing Wichita’s Riverfront Experience
The project aims to revitalize the riverbank by introducing new walking trails, public art installations, and landscaping features that will significantly improve the overall riverfront experience for residents and visitors.
Matt Hamilton, general manager of the Wichita Wind Surge, expressed optimism about the upgrades:
“It’s fun to see the construction trucks out there because we all know that means work is going on. It’s all positive, and when it’s all done, it’s going to be nothing but good things for Wichita as a whole.”
City Leaders Support the Vision
District 4 City Council member Dalton Glasscock also shared his enthusiasm for the transformation, pointing to existing developments as a model for the improvements underway.
“If people want a visual of what this part of the river is going to look like, they can look at the River Vista Apartments just on the north side of Douglas, and (workers) are really replicating that and tying that all the way down.”
$12 Million Project Backed by Federal Funding
The riverbank enhancement initiative is part of a larger $12 million investment, with the majority of the funding secured through federal grants.
The upgrades aim to create a more vibrant, accessible, and visually appealing riverfront corridor, tying together key parts of downtown Wichita.
Though the construction along Wichita’s Arkansas River may cause short-term inconvenience, the long-term benefits promise to be transformative.
With improved pathways, public art, and a rejuvenated landscape, this federally funded project will elevate the Delano District’s appeal and strengthen Wichita’s position as a riverfront destination.
