Wichita Schools Provide Reassurance to Immigrant Families Amid Rising Immigration Enforcement Concerns

As the 2025–2026 school year approaches, Wichita Public Schools is taking proactive steps to reassure immigrant families and ensure that students feel safe and supported, despite increasing concerns tied to immigration enforcement.

During a recent press conference, USD 259 Spanish Communications Specialist Maria Kury addressed the growing apprehension within the community, especially among immigrant parents.

“There’s fear and uncertainty,” Kury noted. “But our focus is steadfast—we’re here to support and prepare all students for a successful future.”

Federal Policy Changes Raise Local Concerns

The community’s rising concerns are largely due to a policy reversal by the Trump administration, which eliminated earlier protections that had previously limited immigration enforcement actions in schools and other sensitive areas.

Despite these federal developments, Wichita Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld emphasized that the district is committed to adhering to strict legal protections.

“Nothing can proceed without a court-issued warrant signed by a judge,” said Bielefeld. “That legal requirement stands firm under our operational guidelines.”

Strengthening Communication and Transparency

In an effort to boost transparency and trust, Wichita Public Schools has introduced a number of initiatives:

  • Monthly press briefings to keep families informed.
  • A dedicated multilingual webpage with frequently asked questions about how the district will respond if immigration authorities appear on school grounds.

Kury further stressed the district’s commitment to inclusivity:
“We ensure that all students feel welcome and safe within our schools, no matter their background.”

While changes in federal policy have heightened anxiety among immigrant communities, Wichita Public Schools is reaffirming its unwavering dedication to student welfare.

Through clear communication, legal protections, and community outreach, the district is striving to create a secure and inclusive environment where every student can thrive, regardless of immigration status.
