Wichita State Hosts iCan Swim and iCan Bike Camps to Empower Children with Disabilities

Wichita State University is once again opening its doors to host the iCan Swim and iCan Bike summer programs, offering children with disabilities the chance to independently learn how to ride a two-wheel bicycle and swim.

These transformative camps are designed to cater to each participant’s individual needs and abilities, helping them build both skills and confidence.

Camp Schedule and Media Opportunities

The camps will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, July 28 through Friday, August 1, at the Heskett Center on the Wichita State campus.

While there is no media access between 12:30–1:30 p.m., Thursday has been recommended as the best opportunity for photo and video coverage, offering visuals of participants actively learning to swim and bike, along with interviews with WSU faculty, student volunteers, and families.

Hands-On Support and Continued Guidance

Participants receive individualized instruction both in the water and on bikes, guided by trained volunteers and Wichita State students.

To ensure lasting success, these student volunteers also offer follow-up consultations with families after the camp ends, helping reinforce skills and encourage continued development at home.

This program exemplifies WSU’s mission of applied learning and community engagement, originating from student-led advocacy that brought the camp to campus.

Collaboration and Sponsorship

The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Wichita State Department of Physical Therapy and Davis-Moore Auto Group, emphasizing the university’s dedication to community partnerships and accessible programming for youth with disabilities.
