As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Kansas City and surrounding areas in Kansas and Missouri are making significant financial commitments to host the historic event.
The nonprofit KC2026, responsible for managing host city strategy, estimates that $165 million will be required to successfully host the matches and related festivities.
Funding Sources and State Contributions
A wide range of public and private funding sources are backing the initiative. The State of Missouri leads as the top contributor, allocating $74 million toward the project. Meanwhile, the State of Kansas has pledged $28 million, further reinforcing the bi-state collaboration.
In addition:
- Kansas City, Missouri, has committed $15 million via an ordinance passed in 2023.
- Johnson County approved $1.5 million from its budget.
- Overland Park, while not contributing directly to KC2026, has outlined its own investment plans.
Overland Park’s Independent Investment Plans
The City of Overland Park is planning its own initiatives to support the World Cup without funneling money directly to KC2026. Communications Director Meg Ralph emphasized the city’s intention to prepare independently for the anticipated influx of visitors.
Planned allocations include:
- $200,000 for a transportation collaboration with Johnson County
- $50,000 for World Cup-themed activities in city parks and enhancements to the Star-Spangled Spectacular fireworks show
- $25,000 for emergency supplies and public safety enhancements
Expected Returns and Economic Impact
Officials anticipate a significant economic boost, especially through increased sales and hotel tax revenues. With more than 350 days to go, the region is preparing to showcase itself on the global stage.
The estimated financial impact from hosting the event is projected to be around $652 million, according to KC2026 organizers.
The 2026 World Cup presents a transformative opportunity for Kansas City, Overland Park, and the broader metro region, both economically and culturally.
With strategic investment and collaborative planning, the area is poised to shine in front of a global audience, drawing visitors, boosting local economies, and reinforcing its position as a world-class host.
