Law enforcement officers detained a man Friday afternoon after authorities said he stole a marked Sacramento Police Department patrol vehicle while officers were responding to a vandalism report.
Sacramento police said officers were called just after 12:30 p.m. to the area of Marysville Boulevard and South Avenue after a caller reported that a homeless man had thrown a bucket at her tire and chased her with a large stick.
Police said the man later struck the caller’s window with the stick. When officers attempted to detain him, he escaped and drove away in a marked police cruiser, triggering a pursuit.
Video Shows Suspect Driving Away in Cruiser
Video obtained by KCRA 3 showed the suspect avoiding officers, getting into the patrol vehicle, and driving off. Another nearby officer then began chasing the stolen police cruiser.
The pursuit was later taken over by the California Highway Patrol and continued onto the freeway before ending in the Lodi area.
Chase Moves Onto Highway 99
At about 1:36 p.m., officers were seen pursuing the stolen vehicle southbound on Highway 99 near Galt in Sacramento County.
A few minutes later, a CHP officer appeared to try catching up to the stolen cruiser, likely preparing for a PIT maneuver.
At around 1:42 p.m., an officer attempted a PIT maneuver in the Lodi area of San Joaquin County, striking the rear of the stolen cruiser. The move did not stop the vehicle, and the driver continued fleeing. The cruiser appeared to have rear bumper damage after the impact.
Suspect Surrenders Near Turner Road
At approximately 1:47 p.m., a CHP cruiser again hit the back of the stolen patrol vehicle, but it still did not stop immediately.
About a minute later, the suspect motioned his hands out of the vehicle, allowed the cruiser to slow down, exited the vehicle, and lay on the ground.
Officers surrounded him and took him into custody on the highway near Turner Road. Southbound lanes of Highway 99 were temporarily blocked but have since reopened.
Suspect Identified as Isaac Paval
Police identified the man taken into custody as 28-year-old Isaac Paval.
Authorities said Paval has a criminal history in Sacramento and is currently on pretrial probation for a DUI.
Sacramento Police spokesperson Anthony Gamble said Paval was taken to a hospital for treatment and will later be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony charges connected to the pursuit.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
Gamble said the case remains under investigation, including whether Paval was allegedly in possession of a rifle.
No officers were injured during the incident.
