Authorities arrested a man Monday night after they said he led officers on a high-speed pursuit that began in Miami County, Kansas, and crossed into Missouri before ending in a residential neighborhood.
The suspect is accused of stealing items from a storage facility before fleeing from law enforcement. Officials also clarified that the man taken into custody is not Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, who has been identified as a suspect in a separate series of shootings last week.
Deputy Spots Suspect Vehicle
According to the Miami County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy spotted the suspect’s vehicle near 223rd Street and Ridgeview Road on Monday.
The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop and instead sped away. That began a pursuit involving several law enforcement agencies from both Kansas and Missouri.
Authorities said the vehicle was a pickup truck.
Pursuit Reaches Nearly 90 MPH
During the chase, officials said the driver reached speeds of nearly 90 mph at times. The pursuit moved across highways, rural roads and residential neighborhoods in Johnson County, Kansas.
The truck later crossed into Missouri, where the suspect continued driving through neighborhoods in Jackson and Cass counties.
Law enforcement agencies from both sides of the state line assisted during the pursuit, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.
Chase Ends In Residential Neighborhood
The pursuit eventually ended in the Creekmoor neighborhood in Raymore, Missouri, after the suspect stopped the vehicle.
After the truck stopped, officers began an extensive search for the driver. Authorities said the search included K-9 units from the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office, deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and a helicopter from the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.
The search continued into Monday night.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
Officers eventually caught up with the suspect Monday night and took him into custody.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s name in the initial information provided. Officials also did not immediately provide details on whether any stolen property was recovered or whether anyone was injured during the pursuit.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol specifically noted that the suspect was not Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, a man suspected in a series of shootings last week. That clarification came as law enforcement activity in the area drew public attention.
Charges Under Review
The Miami County Sheriff’s Office said it will submit formal charges to the Miami County Attorney’s Office for review.
Because the pursuit crossed into Missouri, authorities said the driver may also face additional charges there. The final charges will depend on the findings of investigators and decisions made by prosecutors in the involved jurisdictions.
Officials have not released a full list of potential charges, but the case may include allegations connected to theft, fleeing law enforcement and traffic-related offenses.
Multi-Agency Response
The pursuit prompted a coordinated response from multiple agencies. Deputies, police officers, K-9 teams and aviation support were used as authorities worked to locate and arrest the suspect after the vehicle stopped.
High-speed pursuits can create significant risks for officers, suspects and the public, especially when they move through residential areas. Authorities did not immediately report any crashes or injuries connected to Monday’s chase.
The suspect is now in custody after a high-speed chase that began in Kansas and ended in Missouri. Investigators are continuing to review the case, and formal charges are expected to be submitted for consideration.
Additional charges may also be filed in Missouri because of the cross-state pursuit.
