At Least 13 Killed After Truck Carrying Wedding Guests Is Crushed

A tragic road accident on Indonesia’s main island of Java killed 13 people and injured five others after a pickup truck carrying wedding guests was crushed between two trucks, police said Monday. The victims were returning home from a wedding when the collision happened on a busy coastal highway.

Crash Happened Near Indramayu Regency

The crash occurred on Sunday afternoon on the northern coastal highway near Kiajaran Kulon village in Indramayu regency.

According to local traffic police chief Undang Syarif Hidayat, the group had attended a wedding in nearby Parean village and was travelling home when the accident happened.

Pickup Truck Hit From Behind

Police said the wedding guests were riding in an open-bed pickup truck.

The vehicle reportedly slowed down and stopped near a median opening as it prepared to make a U-turn on the highway.

At that moment, a wing-box truck travelling in the same direction struck the pickup from behind.

Second Truck Hits Pickup in Opposite Lane

Hidayat said the impact pushed the pickup truck into the opposite lane.

Once there, the vehicle was struck again by another truck.

The force of the crash threw more than a dozen people from the pickup onto the highway.

Five Survivors Remain in Hospital

Police said five survivors were taken to hospital.

Their injuries ranged from minor to serious.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the crash.

Road Safety Concerns in Indonesia

Fatal traffic accidents are common in Indonesia.

Overloaded vehicles, weak road safety enforcement and poor compliance with traffic rules often contribute to deadly crashes.

This latest incident has once again raised concern about passenger safety, especially when people travel in open-bed vehicles on busy highways.

The deadly crash in Indramayu regency has left 13 wedding guests dead and five others injured after a pickup truck was hit between two trucks on Java’s northern coastal highway.

Police are still investigating the cause, while the tragedy highlights ongoing road safety challenges in Indonesia, including overloaded vehicles, risky highway manoeuvres and the dangers of carrying passengers in open truck beds.
