A man died Thursday after an argument escalated into gunfire at an apartment complex in Kansas City, Missouri.
Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to the 9400 block of Cleveland Avenue at about 4:45 p.m. after reports of a shooting. The incident happened in the Hidden Valley neighborhood, according to police.
When officers arrived, they found a man in the parking lot who had been shot multiple times. Emergency medical crews responded and the victim was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Argument Reportedly Began Inside Apartment
Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, said preliminary information indicated the shooting followed an argument involving the victim and another person.
Police said the argument began inside an apartment before moving outside to the parking lot. Once outside, several other people reportedly became involved.
The dispute then escalated into gunfire, and the man was struck. Authorities have not released the victim’s name, pending notification of family members.
Detectives Canvass Area For Witnesses
After the shooting, homicide detectives remained at the apartment complex to speak with witnesses and gather evidence.
Investigators were canvassing the area Thursday evening and talking with people who may have seen or heard what happened before the gunfire. Police have not said whether anyone was taken into custody or whether a suspect had been identified.
Authorities also have not released details about the weapon used or what may have caused the original argument.

The man’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
According to data tracked by The Kansas City Star, the killing marked the city’s 63rd homicide of 2026. At the same point last year, the city had recorded 75 homicides.
Police said the investigation remains active, and additional details may be released as detectives learn more about the events leading up to the shooting.
