As winter approaches, the Great Plains Nature Center (GPNC) in Wichita is gearing up to protect its landscapes, trails and wildlife habitat against cold months ahead.
A special Fall Work Day is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 8 at 6232 E. 29th St. North, Wichita, KS — and the public is invited to help.
Volunteers will assist with trail cleanup, nest-site maintenance, plant removal, and other tasks designed to make the park safer and more resilient for both nature and visitors.
What you can help with
Here’s a breakdown of key tasks and why they’re important:
| Task | Why it matters | Typical effort required |
|---|---|---|
| Trail cleanup (branches, trash) | Clears pathways for winter safety & improves visitor access | 1–2 hours per volunteer |
| Nest-site maintenance | Helps local birds and wildlife by ensuring safe places for roosting and shelter | Lightweight tools & gloves |
| Plant clean-out (invasive species or dead growth) | Reduces competition for native plants and helps spring growth | 1–3 hours, small groups |
| General maintenance & prep | Ensures the facility is ready for Winter Walking events and school groups | Varies by volunteer role |
Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and lunch will be served around 11 a.m. for those who participate. It’s a great way to spend a fall morning, help nature, and meet fellow community members.
The bigger picture at GPNC
- GPNC serves over 58,000 students annually through environmental education programs, including more than 11,000 at-risk youth, all free of charge.
- The facility operates with partner support from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks and the City of Wichita.
- From November 1 to February 28, the center switches to its winter hours (note: check the website for specifics).
- GPNC sits within the 232-acre Chisholm Creek Park and features paved trails, indoor exhibits, live-animal habitats and a community-oriented nature experience.
Why your help is crucial
Even though winter might seem quiet, it’s actually a high-impact season for nature centers:
- Wildlife require undisturbed habitat and safe spaces as temperatures drop and food becomes scarcer.
- Trails and facilities need prepping to handle freezes, storm runoff and foot traffic when paths are slick.
- Volunteer work now means fewer surprises come spring, less costly repair, and a smoother visitor experience.
By volunteering, you’re contributing to wildlife stewardship, community education, and outdoor access for all.
How to join
- Register via GPNC’s website or contact the volunteer coordinator. RSVP helps with lunch counts and tool preparation.
- Wear sturdy shoes, gloves and dress for weather (layers recommended!). Bring a water bottle and your own reusable gear if possible.
- Show up at 9 a.m., check in at the entry desk, receive tool assignment, complete tasks by noon and enjoy a complimentary lunch.
This is your opportunity to support a vital community asset and engage directly with nature right here in Wichita.
By pitching in at the Great Plains Nature Center’s Fall Work Day, you’ll help protect wildlife, ensure safe access for visitors this winter, and strengthen your connection to the outdoors.
Bring your enthusiasm, dress for the weather, and lend a helping hand — nature thanks you!
