Wichita Truck Driver Dies In K-23 Highway Crash With Oil Derrick

On Wednesday afternoon, March 25, 2025, a fatal accident occurred on K-23 Highway in Sheridan County, Kansas.

A 1979 Kenworth flatbed truck hauling an oil derrick collided with overhead live power lines, resulting in the tragic death of the driver, Shawn Kinder, a 53-year-old resident of Wichita.​

Accident Details

At approximately 3:00 p.m., about 6.5 miles south of US-24 Highway, near the intersection of K-23 and Road 70 South, the incident unfolded.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), Kinder was traveling southbound when he attempted to turn right into a ditch to gain additional clearance.

During this maneuver, the oil derrick made contact with the overhead live power lines running along the north side of Road 70 South.​

Consequences of the Collision

The contact with the power lines resulted in a severe electrical incident, leading to Shawn Kinder being ejected from the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. A passerby, a 48-year-old man from Natoma, witnessed the aftermath and was able to enter the vehicle to apply the parking brake, preventing further movement. He did not sustain any injuries.​
