In the early hours of Thursday, October 9, 2025, Emporia Police officers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of 12th Avenue and Merchant Street.
The stop led to the arrest of 66-year-old Thomas G. Lawrence of Emporia on several serious charges.
According to Investigations Captain Lisa Hayes, Lawrence was initially detained on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Subsequent investigation revealed additional offenses.

- Possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute (less than 100 grams)
- Possession of marijuana
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- Battery on law enforcement
- Interference with law enforcement
- Operating a vehicle without insurance
The Lyon County online jail roster indicates that the methamphetamine distribution charge involves less than 100 grams.
