ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller is recovering after suffering life-changing injuries in a serious vehicle collision that required the amputation of his left arm.
Miller shared an update on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, saying he felt fortunate to be alive following the crash in rural Missouri. He thanked emergency responders and medical workers while acknowledging that his recovery would take considerable time.
Miller Airlifted After Highway Collision
The crash occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, along Missouri Route 96 in Jasper County, about 1.5 miles west of Oronogo.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2023 Ford Bronco travelling east crossed the centre of the roadway. A westbound 2024 International semi-truck attempted to avoid the Bronco before the two vehicles collided.
The Bronco struck the front driver’s side of the truck and travelled off the southern side of the road. The semi left the northern side, overcorrected and eventually went off the southern side as well.
Both vehicles were declared total losses.
Analyst Suffered Significant Injuries
Miller, 42, was driving the Bronco and suffered serious injuries. He was transported by medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Joplin.
In his public statement, Miller said he sustained multiple fractures and broken ribs. Doctors also performed what he described as a life-saving amputation of his left arm.
The 28-year-old Springfield man driving the semi-truck was not injured. The Highway Patrol reported that both drivers were wearing safety restraints.
Miller expressed gratitude to the first responders, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who treated him following the collision.
Long Recovery Ahead
Miller said he is taking his recovery one day at a time while processing the effects of the accident.
He also thanked supporters for the messages, prayers and encouragement sent to him and his family. His announcement prompted an outpouring of support from football journalists, ESPN colleagues, fans and members of the wider NFL community.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Miller said he plans to return to ESPN and continue discussing football. He specifically mentioned his enthusiasm for covering what he expects to be an exciting 2027 NFL Draft class.
No timetable has been announced for his return to television, writing or podcast work.
Miller Built Career Through NFL Draft Coverage
Miller grew up in the small community of Liberal, Missouri, and has maintained strong connections to the Joplin region.
Before becoming a nationally recognised football analyst, he worked in marketing and held several roles connected to scouting and coaching. He coached with the Joplin Crusaders from 2006 to 2008 and served as director of scouting for New Era Scouting between 2006 and 2010.
Miller joined Bleacher Report as an NFL Draft writer in 2010. He later became the outlet’s lead draft analyst and remained there until 2021.
He joined ESPN in 2021 and has since contributed year-round analysis covering college prospects, team needs, mock drafts and the NFL selection process.
Matt Miller faces an extensive recovery after the June 17 crash left him with fractures, broken ribs and the loss of his left arm. While the collision has dramatically changed his life, the ESPN analyst remains focused on healing and eventually returning to football coverage.
His update emphasised gratitude for the people who saved his life and optimism about the difficult journey ahead.
