A tragic farmer train accident in northeast Kansas left a 41-year-old man dead Monday after an industrial farm sprayer was struck by a train at a railroad crossing.
Authorities said the crash happened in Marshall County and also left two train conductors seriously injured.
Fatal Farmer Train Accident Reported In Marshall County
The crash occurred around 4:40 p.m. at 675 Harvest Road at the Union Pacific Railroad Crossing, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The man who died was identified as Ryan Friedrichs, 41, of Marysville, Kansas. He was driving an industrial farm sprayer southbound on a private driveway just south of Harvest Road when the collision happened.
Authorities said Friedrichs failed to stop at a stop sign before the sprayer entered the crossing area.
Sprayer Struck By Westbound Train
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the train was traveling westbound when it struck the industrial farm sprayer.
The impact caused Friedrichs to be ejected from the sprayer. He died following the crash.
The details released by authorities indicate the collision happened at a railroad crossing where the private driveway meets the Union Pacific tracks. No additional details were provided about the speed of the train or the condition of the crossing at the time of the crash.
Two Train Conductors Seriously Injured
The farmer train accident also injured two conductors who were on the train at the time of the collision.
Both conductors were taken to Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville with serious injuries. Their names were not included in the information released.
Authorities did not provide further updates on their conditions.
Highway Patrol Details The Crash
The Kansas Highway Patrol said the sprayer had been traveling southbound before the crash. Investigators reported that Friedrichs did not stop at a stop sign before the vehicle was struck by the westbound train.
The crash remains a serious incident involving both agricultural equipment and rail traffic.
Industrial farm sprayers are large vehicles commonly used in farming operations, and crashes involving trains can be especially severe because of the size and force involved. In this case, the collision proved fatal for the driver and caused serious injuries to two people aboard the train.
Community Impact After Deadly Crash
The death of Ryan Friedrichs marks a heartbreaking loss for the Marysville area and the wider Marshall County community. The crash happened during the late afternoon, a time when farm and rural road activity can still be active.
While authorities have released the basic details of the crash, no further information has been provided about what happened immediately before the collision beyond the report that the sprayer failed to stop at the stop sign.
The farmer train accident remains a reminder of how quickly rural road and railroad crossing incidents can turn deadly.
As officials continue to document the crash, the focus remains on the man who lost his life and the two conductors who were seriously injured in the collision.
