Father Of Teen Killed During Home Invasion Says He Wants Answers

The father of an 18-year-old who was shot and killed during an alleged home invasion is speaking out, saying he wants answers about how his son ended up at a stranger’s home in the middle of the night.

Allen Barker is mourning the death of his son, Tristan Barker, who was killed June 19 in Blue Springs, Missouri. Police said Tristan unlawfully entered a residence in the 100 block of Little Garden before he was shot by the homeowner.

Speaking about his son, Allen Barker said Tristan was still young, vulnerable and full of potential.

“He was just a kid,” Barker said.

Family Remembers Tristan Barker

Barker described Tristan as creative, imaginative and kind-hearted. He said his son loved art, video games and had many dreams for the future.

“He was an artist. He had a big heart, huge imagination, lots of dreams,” Barker said.

The family had celebrated Tristan’s 18th birthday just last month. Barker said that birthday celebration was the last time he saw his son alive. He remembered the day as happy and ordinary, filled with video games, joking and time spent together.

For Barker, those memories now carry even more weight as the family tries to understand what happened.

Father Says Son Was Autistic

According to Barker, Tristan was high-functioning autistic and his mental development was closer to that of a younger child.

“Mentally, he was probably somewhere around 12 or 13,” Barker said.

Tristan had been living in a nearby group home. His father said he believes his son may have left the facility after becoming upset about his VR headset, which he described as Tristan’s prized possession.

Barker said someone at the group home believed Tristan had left after the headset broke or stopped working. He may have gone into the neighborhood believing he could find someone to repair it.

Questions Raised About Group Home

Barker said he does not blame the homeowner for what happened. He said he believes the homeowner acted in the moment to protect his family.

“The homeowner did what he thought he had to do to protect his family,” Barker said. “I don’t fault him there — I do wish that it was maybe handled differently.”

However, Barker said he has serious questions about what happened at the group home before Tristan left.

He claimed someone at the facility heard a door open but assumed it was someone taking out the trash. Barker said that moment may have been critical.

“When you heard that door go off, why didn’t they check?” he said through tears. “That would’ve been the difference. He’d still be alive if they had.”

Investigation Remains Ongoing

Police have said Tristan unlawfully entered the home before the shooting. The full circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Authorities have not released additional details about the homeowner, the timeline of events inside the residence or whether any charges are being considered.

For now, Barker said his family is focused on grieving Tristan and seeking clarity about the events that led to his death.

A GoFundMe has also been started to help the family pay for Tristan’s services.

Tristan Barker’s death has left his family searching for answers after the 18-year-old was shot and killed following an alleged home invasion.

His father says Tristan was autistic, creative and still childlike in many ways. While he does not blame the homeowner, he wants to know how his son was able to leave his group home unnoticed and end up in a situation that cost him his life.
