FBI Announces 305 Arrests, 24 Missing Children Recovered in Chicago During Operation New Dawn

FBI Director Kash Patel has described a major multi-agency law enforcement operation in the Chicago area that led to more than 300 arrests over a 60-day period.

The initiative, called Operation New Dawn, brought together several federal agencies to target violent crime, child exploitation, drug trafficking, firearms offenses, kidnapping, robbery and other serious crimes.

FBI Director Says Operation Targeted Violent Crime and Crimes Against Children

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Patel said Operation New Dawn represented a large-scale, whole-of-government effort under President Donald Trump’s leadership.

He said the operation was designed to crack down on violent crime and crimes against children in major American cities.

Patel said the Chicago operation involved 11 federal agencies working together and resulted in 305 arrests.

Twenty-Four Children Recovered

One of the most significant outcomes of the operation was the recovery of 24 children.

According to Patel, many of the children had previously been reported missing or kidnapped.

He said the arrests included individuals accused of crimes such as robbery, kidnapping, drug trafficking and child exploitation.

Federal Agencies Worked Together

The agencies involved included the:

  • FBI
  • Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA
  • Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF
  • Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI

The details were included in a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.

Other suspects arrested during the operation were allegedly connected to firearms trafficking, firearm-related offenses and immigration violations.

Operation Described as “Badgeless”

Federal officials described Operation New Dawn as a “badgeless” effort.

That means agencies worked together under the symbol of the United States flag, rather than focusing on the individual badge, logo or shield of any single agency.

Officials said this approach helped create a unified federal response to violent crime in Chicago.

U.S. Attorney Says Law Enforcement Must Move Quickly

U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros said the operation marked a new era for law enforcement in the United States.

He said that to fight violence effectively, federal law enforcement must move at the same speed as violence.

Boutros said the success of Operation New Dawn proved the value of a united anti-violence strategy. He added that Chicago’s federal law enforcement agencies came together under one banner to make their presence known on the streets.

ATF Praises Team-Based Approach

Christopher Amon, ATF Special Agent in Charge in Chicago, said law enforcement has always been a team effort.

He said Operation New Dawn succeeded because of leadership from the U.S. Attorney’s Office and strong cooperation among federal law enforcement partners in Chicago.

Amon said the operation helped remove shooters and other violent offenders from the streets, making Chicago safer.

Suspects Included Convicted Murderer and Gang Members

Officials said the coordinated effort allowed agencies to arrest suspects such as Felipe Dejesus Gomez Ramirez, whom Homeland Security Investigations identified as a convicted murderer and illegal alien.

Authorities also arrested David Collins and Tyrone Thomas, who they said are members of Chicago’s Traveling Vice Lords criminal gang.

Both Collins and Thomas were federally charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl.

DEA Highlights Link Between Drugs and Violence

Todd C. Smith, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Chicago Field Division, said Operation New Dawn showed the power of coordinated law enforcement.

He said federal, state and local agencies used intelligence, resources and expertise to target individuals and criminal networks that threaten public safety.

Smith said reducing violent crime remains one of the DEA’s top priorities. He added that the drug seizures from the operation show the close connection between violence and drug trafficking.

Focus on Fentanyl and Criminal Networks

The DEA said the operation also supported its broader goal of building a Fentanyl Free America.

Officials said disrupting criminal organizations, removing dangerous drugs from communities and holding offenders accountable are key parts of improving public safety.

Operation Began on May 1

Operation New Dawn began in earnest on May 1.

So far, the operation has resulted in 179 criminal defendants being charged in federal court.

Those charges are connected to 140 newly filed criminal cases.

Officials also confirmed that 24 children were found and safely returned home.

Summer Heat 2.0 and Future Operations

Patel said the success of Operation New Dawn should send a clear message that the FBI, the Justice Department and partner agencies are fully committed to targeting criminal networks across the country.

He also linked the effort to future enforcement initiatives, including Summer Heat 2.0.

According to Patel, these operations are intended to show that federal law enforcement will continue pursuing criminal organizations wherever they operate.
