Man Dies After SUV Collides With Semi Driven By Teen

A 68-year-old man died Saturday evening after a crash involving an SUV and a semi tractor-trailer in Logan County, Kansas, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 7 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 430 and Apache Acre. Authorities said the collision involved a 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe and a 1989 semi tractor-trailer hauling a 2008 Mercury trailer.

The driver of the Tahoe was identified as Maynard K. Unruh, 68, of Oakley. He was taken to Logan County Hospital after the crash, where he died about two hours later.

Crash Happened At Rural Intersection

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the semi tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on County Road 430 before the crash.

At the same time, the Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling eastbound on Apache Acre. The two vehicles collided at the intersection.

After impact, both vehicles entered the east ditch. The Tahoe then rotated and rolled before coming to rest on County Road 430.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about what may have led to the crash.

SUV Driver Dies At Hospital

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Unruh to Logan County Hospital.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said he later died from his injuries. Officials have not released further information about the specific nature of those injuries.

The crash report listed Unruh as the driver of the Tahoe.

Teen Semi Driver Injured

The semi was driven by a 15-year-old from Oakley, according to KHP.

Authorities said the teen suffered minor injuries in the crash. No further details were immediately released about his condition.

The report did not indicate whether any passengers were involved in either vehicle.

Seat Belts Were Not Being Used

The Kansas Highway Patrol said neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Seat belt use is often highlighted in crash investigations because it can reduce the risk of serious injury or death, especially in rollover crashes. In this case, the Tahoe rolled after the collision, increasing the severity of the incident.

Officials continue to urge drivers and passengers to buckle up every time they travel, including on rural roads and short trips.

Investigation Continues

The Kansas Highway Patrol is handling the investigation into the fatal crash.

Investigators are expected to review the roadway, vehicle positions, damage and other factors as part of the crash report. It was not immediately clear whether speed, visibility, right-of-way, road conditions or other issues contributed to the collision.

No additional enforcement details were released in the initial report.
