A 29-year-old man has been arrested after authorities accused him of injuring a sheriff’s deputy and damaging two patrol vehicles while allegedly attempting to avoid being taken into custody.
The Bel Aire resident was arrested on suspicion of battery, criminal damage to property and additional alleged offenses, according to information released by the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the incident began Saturday morning after technology alerted deputies to the location of a person wanted by law enforcement.
License Plate Reader Alerts Deputies
Sheriff’s deputies were patrolling the Oaklawn area at approximately 11:09 a.m. Saturday when they received an alert from a license plate reader.
The system reportedly indicated that a vehicle connected to a wanted man had been parked near a business in the 3600 block of East 47th Street South.
License plate readers are commonly used by law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles associated with wanted individuals, investigations or other public safety concerns. The alert allowed deputies to respond to the location and investigate further.
Authorities have not released details about the original case that caused the man to be wanted or disclosed the nature of any outstanding warrant.
Attempt To Make Arrest Turns Confrontational
Deputies arrived near the business and attempted to locate the man connected to the vehicle.
According to the sheriff’s office, the situation escalated while deputies were attempting to take the suspect into custody. Officials alleged that the man tried to evade arrest during the encounter.
A sheriff’s deputy was injured during the incident. Authorities did not immediately release details about the nature or severity of the deputy’s injuries.
It was also unclear whether the deputy required hospital treatment or was able to return to duty following the confrontation.
Two Patrol Vehicles Reportedly Damaged
Investigators said two sheriff’s office patrol vehicles were damaged during the attempted arrest.
Officials have not explained how the vehicles were damaged or released an estimated repair cost. The department also did not confirm whether the patrol vehicles remained operational after the incident.
Damage to emergency vehicles can affect law enforcement resources, particularly when vehicles must be temporarily removed from service for inspections or repairs.
Despite the reported resistance, deputies were eventually able to take the 29-year-old man into custody.
Suspect Faces Multiple Allegations
The man was arrested on suspicion of battery, criminal damage to property and other alleged offenses.
Formal charges had not been announced at the time of the sheriff’s office statement. Prosecutors are expected to review reports, witness information and other evidence before determining which charges may be filed.
An arrest on suspicion of an offense does not establish guilt. The suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the court process.
Authorities have not publicly identified the injured deputy or released the arrested man’s name.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to document the confrontation and determine the full extent of the deputy’s injuries and vehicle damage.
Additional information may be released after investigators complete interviews and prosecutors review the case. The arrest highlights how a routine technology alert can quickly develop into a dangerous encounter for officers attempting to apprehend a wanted person.
